Such a Doll

Jessica Bachus’ story is one that proves a mother’s love transcends all.

In 2007, Jessica’s baby girl Kenzi was stillborn at 24 weeks.  Overcome with grief, Jessica felt compelled to channel her emotions into something that would honor Kenzi’s memory. Her idea? To give dolls to young girls at Christmastime who would otherwise go without. That year, Jessica collected over 150 dolls.

Since then, Dolls for Daughters has come a long way. In 2008, over 500 dolls were given. In 2009, 1,100 and last year, Dolls for Daughters was able to give more than 4,000 dolls and toys away with the addition of a new program – Toys for Boys. Last year also saw the launch of Kenzi’s Kidz – a program that helps relieve the financial burdens of low-income families.

And while the topic may be heavy, Dolls for Daughters and Kenzi’s Kidz is celebrating life and helping countless Colorado children by creating simple, yet fun ways to give back. The organization’s annual Dolly Tea Party and respective Bowl-a-Thon are family-friendly events that serve as perfect opportunities to teach your little ones how important serving their communities can be. What’s more, Dolls for Daughters also has several drop off locations throughout Denver where you can donate new dolls and toys – another perfect chance to show your future philanthropists how they can help. Plus, the organization is always on the lookout for new locations willing to serve as collection points and partners in beating their goal of over 4,000 dolls and toys in 2011.  Be a doll, help them out.
