Vanessa Barcus possesses a sophisticated, edgy panache befitting of a New York fashion editor. Yet the talented style hound is a Colorado girl through and through. Raised in Boulder, Vanessa owns and operates Goldyn, one of Denver’s most happening retail hotspots. Here, she shares her ingredients for a fashionable life that’s equal parts big-city chic and Colorado causal.

  1. I travel to NYC quite a bit, and always try to make a stop at my favorite store Evolution in SoHo for obscure odds and ends like skulls, jewelry, insect dioramas, and anything else you can dream up.
  2. Owning Goldyn has really been a dream come true for me, as a lover of fashion. A couple of my personal favorite pieces at the store right now? An incredible shearling-lined leather jacket from Helmut Lang, a cozy, long knit dress from T by Alexander Wang, and a beaded Buddha necklace from noteworthy local designer The Woods.
  3. The best thing for a long flight to NYC is a big, cozy cashmere scarf from Epice.
  4. On the rare occasion you don’t find me working at Goldyn’s boutique in LoHi, I’m most likely heading to one of my favorite local haunts for a drink and a bite.  I adore A Cote, the bar adjacent to (equally amazing) French restaurant Z Cuisine, just down the street from us.  It’s a little slice of Paris in Denver.
  5. Decorating has been a side hobby of mine for a long time, and Z Modern is probably my fav place in town for checking out modern classics in furniture by Konstantin Grcic, Eames, Herman Miller and more.
  6. You can’t beat having a Moscow Mule in a frosty copper mug on the rooftop of Linger (the new hotspot restaurant next door to Goldyn) on a sunny day!
  7. On a trip to Paris a year ago I discovered a candle line called Cire Trudon… The company has been around ever since it was the official candlemaker to the French royal family in 1643. They’ve got super unusual and beautiful scents like Roi Soleil – a scent inspired by the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.
  8. I believe a solid wardrobe should contain a mix of high and low, new and old. One of the best collections of amazing vintage clothing I’ve seen is just around the corner from Goldyn at Wishlist Vintage on Umatilla St.
  9. Getting outside and into nature is always important. Growing up in Boulder, the Sanitas hiking trail was my favorite place to recharge.
  10. I swear by Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar Oil Free SPF 30 moisturizer for my oily-but-identity-confused skin.
  11. Along with fashion, music is what inspires me.  The Hi-Dive is always a great place to see up and coming indie rock bands before they make it big.
  12. Speaking of music, one of my favorite local bands is Houses.  They played at a party for Goldyn a while back, and we fell in love with their brand of mellow, 60s-inspired rock n roll.
