Q&A with Blush: YSL The Retrospective

Casey Rosen of Blush

With the YSL Retrospective at the center of Denver’s fashion universe, Reign sat down with Casey Rosen, owner of Larimer Square’s Blush, to get her take on all things YSL, summer fashion trends, and favorite looks.

Reign: Talk about the YSL Retrospective’s impact on Denver, and how it changes the fashion landscape in our city.
Blush: I think the impact of having an exhibit of this magnitude puts Denver on the “radar” as a hip and cosmopolitan city. With that, the art, culinary and fashion aspects, Denver will become more and more prominent.

Reign: Discuss YSL’s personal impact on fashion over the years. How do we see his influence in the styles we wear today?
Blush: One of the most interesting facts I learned was that he paved the way to make it acceptable for women to wear pants. I also love how the exhibit shows all ends of his spectrum, from over the top, to classic, timeless items. I saw many looks that I would totally wear today!

Reign: What lines does Blush carry that are YSL inspired?
Blush: Since we are a contemporary, ready-to-wear and fashion-driven store, many of our lines take inspiration from higher end, couture lines. More specifically, in YSL’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection there are a lot of jewel tones, mint green, ikat prints, color blocking and nautical themes. In our store we have the same trends from a wide variety of lines, from ALC and Tibi to Sanctuary and Velvet.

YSL shoesReign: What’s your favorite YSL piece this season?
Blush: It’s a tie. There are 2 pieces we love for different reasons. Considering both my mom and I love shoes, there are two that really stand out. First is the Starfish Platform Wedge; these shoes are fun and flirty. We like how you can wear them on many occasions and they are cute back to denim. Although starfish are very on trend, nautical is always a classic spring/summer look. Our other favorite is the Colorblock Sling Pump. We love this color combination in particular and think they are timeless. If only we had someplace to wear them!

Reign: What are your favorite picks from Blush for the summer?
Blush: NSF Beck Boyfriend Denim in Rail Stripe, Graham & Spencer Marrakesh Strapless Maxi Dress, ALC Silvie Top in Navy, Soludos Espadrilles, anything from 49 Square Miles, Tibi Layla Ikat Top in Petal and Yosi Samra neon patent leather ballet flats.

Reign: What was your first piece of designer fashion?
Blush: My mom and I were in Vegas on a girls’ trip. I had just turned 21 and we were walking around shopping. As we walked by Prada in the Bellagio, I saw the most beautiful pair of sequin chunky heels in the window. Later that evening we were playing the nickel slots and I won $275! I immediately cashed out and we walked straight over to Prada. (The cost of shoes was a little different back then.) I still have them and love them just as much as the day I purchased them. Sadly, I cannot wear them as they are well past worn…

Reign: What is the best piece of fashion advice you’ve ever been given?
Blush: It was given to me by my mom. However, she didn’t come up with it, she did read it. It’s so true: “You have to have style. It helps you get up in the morning” – Diana Vreeland

Reign: Favorite trends this season?
Blush: Similar to YSL, we love color! There are so many color themes happening right now. From the soft “garden party” colors, to the bright jewel tones. As far as prints there is definitely a presence of ikat, floral prints and stripes.

Reign: Trends to stay away from?
Blush: Fringe. We have been seeing it a lot lately. It looks great in the concrete jungle of NYC, and very boho chic while shopping at the Lumber Yard in Malibu. But in Colorado… that may be a little too close to our roots.
