Ladies First

Reign Denver Magazine Ladies First Glamping ColoradoEntrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. Late nights, long hours and an unrelenting passion for your work are but a few of the many reasons that owning a business can be just as challenging as it is gratifying. Yet for many, the rewards far outweigh the risks. And for women in particular, the ability to create the lives we’d imagined is enough to give up the day-to-day security of a 9 to 5 job and trade it in for our own business ventures. Yet in doing so, balance becomes a thing of the past. Far too often, we fail to take moments for ourselves. We trade quiet time for computer time and soul searching for web surfing. And too frequently, we forget to support the other female entrepreneurs who can so closely relate to our own experiences.

As Reign Magazine’s publisher and editor in chief, balance is my biggest struggle. Admittedly, I have none. I love my work and am so invested in our publication that I tend to forget to actually live life. Knowing that I was not alone, I hand-selected a group of other entrepreneurial women and headed for the hills. Some I had known for years and some I did not know at all. But I trusted my gut and chose those that I knew could relate. That I knew were also building their own ventures and struggling with their own searches for balance.

What transpired was a weekend where for 48 hours, there were no laptops. No cell phones. No texts, no tweets, no posting, liking or pinning. But there was sharing. And solidarity. And plenty of laughter. In unplugging, albeit for only a moment, we learned much about our spirits and ourselves. We broke the rules and made our own. We tried things we’d never dreamed of and for the first time in a long time, took a true time out, learning these lessons along the way.

1. Be kind to yourself. If you’re not, why would anyone else be?
2. Believe in yourself. You can move mountains.
3. Be true to yourself. Don’t compromise your vision. If you do, you may not recognize the end of the rainbow.
4. Be open to others. Unlikely friendships are the best friendships of all.
5. Breathe. Sometimes, the answer is only an om away.
