We love a good gallery wall. Done well, it can be a showstopping way to honor family photos, display a favorite collection or add dramatic impact to your home. Done not so well, it can be a cultivated mess of design havoc. Here, six tips for curating and displaying a gallery wall that celebrates your aesthetic in proper style.
1. Opt for a collected look.
There’s nothing special about a wall that looks like it walked off the pages of a catalog. Whether it’s made up entirely of photos, or inspired objects and other keepsakes, your gallery wall should have interest and feel authentic.
2. Pick a focal point.
It’s easiest to play off of a central image or object (Hermes scarf, anyone?) and build from there. That way, your gallery complements, instead if competing.
3. Find a common thread.
Whether it’s similar (or identical) framing, a common metal finish, matte color, or a wall of all things antique, you want the gallery to look and feel eclectic, not all over the place.
4. Consider your surroundings.
A home that’s ultra modern wouldn’t mesh with a gallery wall appointed with cutesy sayings or your grandmother’s knick knacks. Likewise, a more traditional home calls for a gallery wall that speaks to its architecture and appointments.
5. Map it out.
Don’t just start hammering and hanging. Create paper templates of each frame and/or shape you wish to hang and practice with removable tape first. There are oodles of gallery wall templates available on Pinterest. Take your pick.
6. Have fun.
Your gallery wall is a creative outlet to showcase your style and celebrate your life and loves. Ultimately, this should represent who you are, how you live and what is so important to you that you want it staring back at you day in and day out. So while the rules are certainly something to consider, don’t be afraid to break them.
