Domestic Bliss

Finding the balance between form and function can be challenging, particularly with a new build and blank canvas. But for designer Shannon McElroy, the answers revealed themselves room by room during the construction of this opulent home in Douglas County’s Back Country enclave. “The client has a very busy and on the go lifestyle so the home needed to function in a way that allowed them to live as a family with the day to day activities but also provided a space that was great for entertaining large groups,” McElroy, a designer at her family’s business, Carla’s A Classic Design, explains. To strike this balance, she incorporated a true Hollywood Regency feel into the project, while remaining mindful in her choices of fabrics and finishes.

With this edict in mind, McElroy and her team created a space with plenty of interest and personality while utilizing alluring yet enduring upholstery and treatments. Throughout the home, a largely neutral color scheme was incorporated, with metallic accents, mirrors and glamorous accessories. The result was equal parts luxe and livable and the overall aesthetic lent itself to the unique architecture created by builder Malibu Homes. “The lighting in the home really makes an impact as you move throughout each room,” McElroy points out. The mix of crystal and metal adds sparkle and interest while anchoring the space.”

A home office in an unexpected palette gives the otherwise neutral abode a playful pop of color without becoming too districting or interrupting the flow. “The office is my pride and joy. It has a very feminine quality to it with a fun mix of turquoise and red. You don’t often think about blending those two colors together in such large quantities since they are typically used as accents. It was really fun to go in and explode the color throughout.”

A tasteful media room evoked a masculine vibe where sports and movie memorabilia is showcased alongside furnishings with clean lines and tailored fabrics. It is a room that is comfortable and cozy all the same. Outside, the expansive living space was built around a stunning swimming pool and multiple water features ideal for enjoying the Colorado summers and sweeping mountain views.
